SDSU Roundup: Women’s 4x400 school record falls

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State women's 4x400-meter relay team broke the school record and multiple other Jacks posted personal-bests at the SDSU Indoor Classic on Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Center.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Savannah Dolezal, Jacleen Patterson, Kayla McDonald and Oksana Covey broke the school record after finishing in 3 minutes, 46.79 seconds.

Covey also set the 600-meter school record (1:32.53) on Friday. Earlier in the day, Dolezal posted a personal-best in the 400-meter run, finishing in 56.63, which moves her into third on the all-time top-10 list.

Zach Koosman cleared 7 feet, 1/2 inch to win the high jump. That mark moves him into second on the school’s all-time top-10 list and is currently tied for 25th in NCAA Division I this season.

Alejandro Sanchez finished second in the 800-meter run, posting a season-best time of 1:50.57. He currently sits atop the Summit League leaderboard.

In the mile run, Brendan Sage finished fifth after posting a personal-best time of 4:10.98. Kyle Burdick finished seventh with a time of 4:12.98. On the women's side, Kendra Dykstra placed fifth with a time of 5:04.34.

A pair of weight throwers finished second and set new personal-best. Colton Bender threw a personal-best distance of 65 feet, 3 1/4 inches in the men's weight throw. He is second on the all-time top-10 list with that mark. Silvia Zanini threw a personal-best distance of 63-1 1/4 in the women's weight throw and is currently second on the all-time top-10.

Bryant Courter set personal-best in the triple-jump (47-7) to move up to No. 7 on the top-10 list. Courter also won the long jump with a distance of 23-4.

Carly Carper took third in the women’s 60-meter dash with a 7.58 clocking.

The SDSU Last Chance Meet is Friday in the SJAC.

Softball

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – South Dakota state went 1-2 over the weekend to finish with a 1-4 record in the season-opening UNI Dome Tournament

SDSU returns to action at the North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville. The Jackrabbits face South Carolina State at 8 a.m. and Eastern Illinois at 10:15 on Friday. They take on Georgia State at 2:45 p.m. and North Florida at 5 p.m. Sunday. They close out the event facing Kansas on Sunday at 8 a.m.

Sunday

• Drake 6, SDSU 4

Megan Sowa had two hits, including a two-run homer, as eight different Bulldogs tallied a hit in the win.

For the Jackrabbits, Brittney Morse finished 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Julia Andersen added a pair of singles.

Both teams finished with 10 hits.

Drake led 2-1 after two innings, moved ahead 5-1 through five and added another run in the top of the sixth. SDSU put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth via an RBI single by Abbey Murphy and a two-run hit from Baily Janssen.

Kailee Smith pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Ashlyn Bender took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks over the first 3 2/3 frames. Abby Deane pitched the final 3 1/3.

Saturday

• SDSU 6, Toledo 3

Trailing 2-0 through three innings, the Jackrabbits outscored the Rockets 6-1 over the final four frames to pick up the win.

Morse hit the first of her two solo home runs in the top of the fourth.

Toledo moved ahead 3-1 in the top the fourth, before SDSU grabbed a 5-3 advantage in the fifth.

Murphy led off the frame with a homer and Andersen added a two-run double to highlight the scoring.

Morse added a homer in the sixth to provide for the final margin.

SDSU’s Yanney Ponce had two hits.

Toledo’s Kaitlyn Cozy and Megan Choate both homered. Marriah Wise tallied two hits.

Bender earned the win in relief of Madison Hope after giving up one run on one hit with three strikeouts over the final five frames.

• Northern Iowa 3, SDSU 2

Ponce again had two hits for SDSU. She singled and scored on an error in the third before tallying an RBI single in the fourth to put the Jackrabbits ahead 2-0.

Andersen also posted two hits for SDSU.

The Panthers scored all three of their runs in the sixth via the long ball, as Bailey Lange had a two-run shot and Mace Wolfe added a solo homer.

Lange earned the win after tossing three innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.

SDSU’s Abby Deane pitch a complete game and gave up three runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks.

Men’s Tennis

DENVER – The Pioneers swept the Jackrabbits 7-0 in a Summit League match Saturday

Diogo Rocha toppled Emerson Styles 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match.

SDSU’s next conference match is April 1 versus Oral Roberts at 11 a.m. in Omaha, Neb.

Equestrian

BROOKINGS – SDSU edged Minnesota-Crookston 8-7 on Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center.

The Jackrabbits’ Taylor Duerr earned MOP accolades en route to her first win in Equitation over Fences with a score of 85. Blair Julia Wright and Alissa Greenwald also had wins.

Jordan Gates won the lone point in Horsemanship

Miranda Sullivan picked up a point in reining.

Jacey Chorlton claimed her first MOP honors on the season, picking up a point in Equitation on the Flat.

SDSU faces TCU and New Mexico State on Feb. 24-25 in Los Cruces, N.M.
