BROOKINGS – Leah Manuleleua’s unassisted goal less than five minutes into the match set the tone as the Jackrabbits shut out Wayne State in dominating fashion, 8-0, on Friday evening at Fishback Soccer Park.

“I thought our team played with a ton of energy coming out of the locker room,” SDSU head coach Brock Thompson said to SDSU Sports Information. “I thought we sharpened up some of the simple things with our movement and composure off the ball and it made all the differ-ence in the world.”

Manuleleua added a second goal in the 32nd minute, this time heading the ball past the Wildcats’ Rachel Grisham off Carina McLennan’s corner kick to give South Dakota State a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Jackrabbits wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half – scoring twice less than 30 seconds apart – as McLennan fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net before Hannah Evans put home a Manuleleua cross to make it 5-0 six minutes in.

Manuleleua picked up a hat trick less than three minutes later with another unassisted goal before Karlee Manding scored inside the box off another McLennan assist in the 57th minute.

Stephanie Dashiell tacked on the final two goals – the first off an assist by Marisa Schulz in the 64th minute and the second on a rebound off Grisham in the 74th minute.

The Jacks finished with 27 shots, including 11 on goal, to Wayne State’s four and two as starting SDSU keeper Maggie Smither (63:18) had one save, as did Hailee Fischer in 26:42.

SDSU also had 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
