SDSU snaps losing streak

PEORIA, Ill. – South Dakota State snapped an 11-match losing streak and closed out nonconference play with a 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16 defeat of UMKC on Saturday afternoon at the CEFCU Classic hosted by Bradley at Renaissance Coliseum.

"It feels good to end a long week with a win," coach Nicole Cirillo told SDSU Sports Information. "We started to compete better last night and continued it through today. A little hope can go a long way."

Sierra Peterson earned all-tournament team honors.

She had 11 kills, two service aces and a block versus the Kangaroos.

Makenzie Hennen contributed 13 kills and a block assist. Ashlynn Smith totaled 11 kills and Macy Smith added five to go with 3 1/2 blocks (two solo) and an ace. Payton Richardson and Hanna Jellema added six kills apiece, as the former also had an ace and a block.

Mattison Munger (26) and Maddie Fay (16) combined for 42 set assists. Ellie Benson paced the defense with 25 digs, Ashlynn Smith chipped in with 16 and Munger 11.

UMKC’s Brooke Jacobs had 12 kills. Alli Schomers added nine kills and a block. Mykal also had nine kills and a block assist, with Alex Ratzlaff contributing eight kills and an ace.

Schomer (18) and Kynnedy Myers (17) combined for 35 set assists. Rhegan Spiegel came up with 23 digs, Ratzlaff 16 and Schomers 10.

South Dakota State (2-11) opens Summit League play at Omaha on Friday at 7 p.m. The Jackrabbits then play host to North Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m. to open a three-match homestand.
