Jackrabbit softball will look to build on its historic 2021 campaign in the upcoming season with a 52-game 2022 slate. The reigning Summit League tournament champions will travel as far as California and Texas for their nonconference schedule before opening Summit League play in Omaha.
“We’ve set ourselves up with some really competitive preseason games to prepare us for the Summit League,” said head coach Krista Wood. “This might be the toughest schedule we’ve ever had but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
The Jackrabbits open 2022 at the Doc Halverson Dome Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa Feb. 11-13. The team will take on regional opponents Northern Iowa, Drake, Iowa State and Nebraska. SDSU went 4-1 at the event last season.
SDSU’s next stop will be San Diego Feb. 18-20 to take part in the Blue & White Invitational at the University of San Diego. Oregon State, Iowa, DePaul, San Diego and UC Riverside are all scheduled to face the Jacks in the three-day event.
Following the weekend in San Diego, the Jackrabbits will travel south to Denton, Texas for the University of North Texas Invitational. SDSU will play Creighton, North Texas and Yale Feb. 25-27.
The Jackrabbits will return to the Midwest for four games in Lincoln, Nebraska March 5-6. SDSU will take on Wichita State and Nebraska for a single game each both Saturday and Sunday.
SDSU will make a spring break trip back to California for UC Santa Barbara’s Spring Break Bash March 11-14. The Jacks are slated to play Sacred Heart, UC Santa Barbara, Princeton and Manhattan during the tournament. Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount will host SDSU for doubleheaders March 16 and 17, respectively, to round out the Jacks’ road trip.
State opens conference action on the road at Omaha for three games March 26-27.
The Jacks will be on the road the following weekend at South Dakota April 2-3.
SDSU will go head-to-head with Minnesota in a midweek doubleheader in Minneapolis April 6, the Jacks final nonconference competition of the regular season.
Western Illinois will visit Brookings for SDSU’s first home events of the season April 9-10 at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
The Jackrabbits stay home the next weekend for a series against Kansas City April 15-16.
State will go to Fargo for a series with North Dakota State April 23-24.
SDSU hosts Summit League newcomer St. Thomas April 30-May 1.
The Jacks meet North Dakota in Brookings May 6-7 to wrap up the regular season.
The Summit League Tournament will be in Brookings May 11-14. The Jackrabbits earned the right to host the 2022 championship tournament after winning the postseason title last season.
NCAA Regionals are set for May 20-22 and Super Regionals are May 27-29. The Women’s College World Series is June 2-8.
SDSU finished the 2021 season 43-8 overall and 21-1 in the Summit League. The Jacks won both the regular season and postseason Summit League crowns to earn a spot in the NCAA DI Softball Tournament for the first time in program history.
