CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Jackrabbit softball team wrapped up its stay at the 2020 Doc Halvorson/UNI Dome Classic on Saturday with another split.

South Dakota State defeated Northern Iowa 6-1 in its first action of the day before falling to Drake 8-1 in Game 2.

The Jacks are now 2-2 on the season.

South Dakota State 6, Northern Iowa 1

Grace Glanzer improved to 2-0 on the season with her second consecutive complete game. She struck out seven and scattered four walks and four hits, allowing just one run.

Peyton Daugherty, Cylie Halvorson and Allison Beaudry each had two-hit performances. Halvorson and Beaudry tallied doubles, while Beaudry and Jocelyn Carrillo each had a pair of RBIs. Mia Elliott and Chiara Bassi drove in the other runs for SDSU.

After working around trouble in the first two innings, the Jackrabbits saw Northern Iowa break through to take the lead in the third. The Panthers led off the frame with a triple to center, and though the Jacks looked to get out of another jam after two quick outs, UNI broke through with an RBI single in the next at-bat.

South Dakota State struck back immediately in the top of the fourth with four runs. Paige Gerdes was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after Halvorson drew a walk, Kelsey Lenox singled to load the bases. Beaudry followed with a two-run, ground-rule double to put the Jackrabbits in front. Elliott drove in another run with a pinch-hit ground ball with one gone, and Bassi made it 4-1 with a two-out single up the middle.

The Jackrabbits tacked on two more in the seventh behind Jocelyn Carrillo’s RBI single. Daugherty and Allison Yoder (bunt) opened the frame inning with back-to-back singles, and with one gone Halvorson was hit by pitch to load the bases. Carrillo followed with her first hit of the season, driving in two runs to push SDSU’s lead to five.

Drake 8, South Dakota State 1

Kendra Conard started and threw two complete innings, allowing four runs on three hits and six walks. She struck out one before Emma Hardin entered in relief.

Hardin tossed the next four innings in relief with three runs allowed and three strikeouts.

Olivia Douglas pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run on two hits and a pair of walks.

Daugherty tallied her third multi-hit game of the season in the loss, leading the Jackrabbit offense that saw Halvorson (RBI), Elliot, Bassi and Callie Wethor add singles.

Drake jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first after a bases-loaded walk and two-RBI ground-rule double, then pushed it to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second.

The Jacks got on the board in the third behind a two-out rally that started with back-to-back singles from Bassi and Daugherty. Yoder loaded the bases with a four-pitch walk, and Halvorson drove Bassi home with a single to left.

That was as close as they’d come; however, as the Bulldogs tacked on three more in the sixth and one more in the seventh while thwarting any Jackrabbit comeback attempts.

Drakes’ Macy Johnson went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks. Libby Ryan and Emily Valtman both drove in two runs.

Nicole Timmons earned the win in the circle after allowing one run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings.
