SDSU strikes early, beats UNI 2-0

WATERLOO, Iowa – South Dakota State scored twice early and Maggie Smither posted her sixth shutout of the season as the Jackrabbits beat Northern Iowa 2-0 in a women’s soccer match Friday night at Cedar Valley for their fourth consecutive victory.

Karlee Manding opened the scoring in the seventh minute. It was SDSU’s first first-half goal of the year.

Maya Hansen netted her first career goal on an assist from Marisa Schulz in the 28th minute.

Smither made four saves.

The Jackrabbits outshot the Panthers 15-11, including 5-4 on goal

Leah Manuleleua fired four shots, Hansen three and Abigail Kastens two. They each put one on goal.

Sunniva Dunagan was issued a yellow card in the 60th minute.

Jordyn Petty had three saves for UNI (4-4).

South Dakota State (6-3) takes on Northern Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. in DeKalb. The Jackrabbits then conclude nonleague action playing host to New Mexico State on Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon.

Notes: Smither has 24 career shutouts plus 11 combined shutouts. She had two solo/eight combined in 2016, six/two in 2017 and 10/one in 2018 to go with her six solo shutouts in 2019. … SDSU is now 9-2-3 versus UNI. … All of SDSU’s six wins this season have been shutouts – a pair of 2-0 wins and four 1-0 triumphs.
