BROOKINGS – Since 2009, South Dakota State University has been selected as a Tree Campus USA institution.
The Tree Campus USA program, supported by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America, recognizes colleges and universities across America for excellent campus forestry practices and conservation efforts.
As part of the recognition, South Dakota State will hold its annual Arbor Day celebration at 10 a.m. Wednesday at its Arbor Day Park.
Tanner Aiken, horticulturist and project manager with SDSU Facilities and Services, will lead the planting of a Manchurian Alder, a cultivar that has been introduced by North Dakota State University and is somewhat uncommon in nurseries.
In addition, Aiken and John Ball, a plant science professor and SDSU Extension specialist, will demonstrate the proper depth of planting, planting techniques and how to select healthy plant stock. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to join.
