BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University will host a high school journalism day camp June 21-22. The camp is headed by faculty in the School of Communication and Journalism and sponsored by the South Dakota Newspaper Association.

Daily schedules include general and breakout sessions covering topics such as mobile journalism, podcasting, social media, photography and writing. Students will learn more about best practices and tools and how to apply them.

“The camp is designed for students who are new to journalism, as well as for those who are already participating in their school journalism programs,” said camp director Marina Hendricks, who also serves as an assistant professor in the School of Communication and Journalism. “We want to provide students with a fun, hands-on learning environment where they can build their skills in photography, digital media, writing and other areas of journalism. Our instructors include local professionals and SDSU faculty members, and they’re all looking forward to working with students who are ready to learn.”

Jacks J-Camp has a cost of $10 per person per day. While attendance both days is encouraged, it is not required. Each day lasts from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with breakfast and lunch included in the cost.

The registration deadline is June 17.
