SDSU volleyball adds three

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State head volleyball coach Nicole Cirillo announced Monday that Brie-Anna Armstrong, Hanna Jellema and Madison Maras have joined the program for the 2017 season.

"These three ladies are not only going to bring us quality depth to our roster in their respective positions, but are also excellent people who will help and support the growth of Jackrabbits volleyball and the places we are going," Cirillo said.

Armstrong is a 5-foot-9 outside attacker from San Antonio, Texas. She hit over 350, recorded more than 500 kills and 190 solo blocks in her last two seasons at Holy Cross High School. She was second in blocking in Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 5A as junior and second in TAPPS 6A as a senior.

Armstrong earned first-team all-region honors as a senior and second team as a junior. She also was a two-time first team all-district and three-time all-tournament pick. She helped the Knights to back-to-back regional titles and a state finals appearances.

A two-time all-state, first-team all-conference and first-team all-metro selection, Jellema is a 5-11 outside hitter from Brandon Valley High School. She was named to the all-state tournament team in 2015, picked for the South Dakota All-Star team and helped her team become state runners-up. She finished her career with 615 kills, .304 hitting percentage, 108 service aces, 179 digs and 88 block assists.

As a senior, Jellema hit .298 with 234 kills after collecting 294 kills and hit .352 as a junior. She helped her team to 59-26 record over four seasons and to team records in block assists and attack percentage in 2015.

A 5-7 defensive specialist, Maras was a two-time all-conference selection and three-time all-area pick. She was named a Breakdown Super 100 senior and to the Class A Volleyball Showcase all-tournament team. Maras finished high school career with a .227 hitting percentage, 626 kills, 199 service aces, 877 digs, 61 solo blocks and 59 block assists. She also led the team in service aces and digs as a junior and senior.

The Windom, Minn., native was a Breakdown Top 75 junior and helped the Windom Area Eagles earn runners-up finishes at three sub-sectionals.
