South Dakota State University head volleyball coach Nicole Cirillo announced Wednesday two members of the high school Class of 2018 have signed National Letters of Intent to enroll at South Dakota State and play for the Jackrabbits.
Signing Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period, were: Crystal Burk, 5-8, outside hitter, Newnan, Ga.; (Newnan High School) and Sydney Andrews, 6-0, middle blocker, Jesup, Iowa (Jesup High School)
“I am excited to introduce Sydney and Crystal to the Jackrabbits community,” Cirillo said. “Crystal’s athleticism and constant smile make her fun to watch on the court. She is a solid six-rotation player who will have a great impact in our program in both the front and back row.
“We are excited for Sydney to join the team and add depth to our roster. Sydney brings a more natural ability to our middle position and her ability to run a quick attack will make it hard for other teams to defend her.”
Burk is a 2017 first-team all-state selection, the Class 2-7A all-area Most Valuable Player and two-time all-area pick. The team MVP was named the Coweta Score Coweta County MVP and Newnan Times Herald co-MVP as a junior.
The Cougars reached the semifinals in 2017 (37-6) and the elite eight in 2016 (35-6) at the Georgia High School Association 2-7A state championship.
She has also been invited to play in the senior all-star match.
The four-year starter finished her high school career with more than 900 kills, 600 set assists, 200 service aces, 800 digs and 70 solo blocks while hitting higher than .200.
Burk played club volleyball for the Tsunami Volleyball Club and was invited to the USA Girls’ Youth National A2 U.S. Invitational Team program last year.
Andrews is a two-time All-North Iowa Cedar League East honoree and the J-Hawks’ Offensive Player of the Year.
As a sophomore, she earned team MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The four-year letterwinner finished her high school career with more than 900 kills, 100 service aces, 500 digs and 250 total blocks and hitting .318.
Andrews played club volleyball for CIA and placed third in the 2015 Junior Nationals.
