SDSU women blow out Coppin State, 94-41

BROOKINGS – It was all Jackrabbits from the opening tip as the women's basketball team trounced the Eagles 94-41 and improved to 6-3 on the season.

The Jacks outscored the Eagles 22-4 in the first quarter and were up 57-15 at halftime. After three quarters, SDSU led 83-27 and Coppin State outscored the Jacks 14-11 in the fourth.

“We played very well,” SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston said. “Some of that was that [Coppin State] is struggling in some areas and to find their rhythm, as sometimes teams do in the early part. We’ve been through that before, but I think the other part is that we played really well. It was good to see our players see the ball go through the net from the three-point line. … We haven’t had a lot of games like that, where you just felt like somebody was really locked in,”

Freshman forward Tori Nelson, who filled in for injured Tagyn Larson, led all scorers with 23 points. She also had four rebounds. Sydney Stapleton had 17 points and six rebounds. She was 5-for-10 from three. Myah Selland had 13 points and Tylee Irwin had 11.

“To see Sydney go and shoot the ball as well as she did and was comfortable as she did was really good, not only for her confidence, but for the teams. Tori played really well. She can just do so many things. She can get to the basket and shoot the ball really well,” Johnston said.

SDSU shot 55.3% from the field in the first half and 46.2% for the game. They also shot 38.7% from three. The Jacks held the Eagles to 34% shooting from the field and 27.8% from three.

Up next, the Jacks will go on the road to take on the No. 3 ranked Oregon Ducks Sunday. Oregon was No. 1 last week before falling to No. 8 Louisville last week 72-62. The Ducks beat SDSU twice last season, 87-79 in Brookings and 63-53 in the Sweet 16.

“[Oregon] is going to be awfully good and sometimes after a loss that gets everybody more energized and focused. That loss to Louisville, they missed a lot of shots they typically make. When you play a team that caliber, you have to make things difficult. You’re not going to stop them completely, but you have to make things difficult. We’ve played them twice now and in both games we played them pretty well and gave ourselves chances,” Johnston said.

Tip off between the Jacks and Ducks is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
