SDSU women set for Florida Gulf Coast


BROOKINGS – Two of the nation’s top mid-major teams clash Friday when the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (0-1) plays its home opener against Florida Gulf Coast (0-0) at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits opened their 53rd season on the road Tuesday at No. 19 Marquette, losing 91-52. Friday’s game is the season opener for the Eagles.

SDSU and FGCU are ranked second and eighth, respectively, in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major preseason poll released Tuesday.

Noteworthy

The Jackrabbits have won nine of their last 10 home games, dating to a 67-61 win over Oklahoma Dec. 6, 2017. ... SDSU is looking for its sixth consecutive home-opening win Friday. Last season, the Jacks defeated NJIT, 92-48, in Frost Arena. ... Last year, State went 10-4 in nonleague games. ... Both the Jackrabbits and the Eagles were picked to win their respective leagues. ... Friday’s game is the third meeting between South Dakota State and Florida Gulf Coast. The Jacks trail in the series 2-0. The last meeting between the teams was Dec. 29, 2017, when the Eagles won 87-78 in Florida. ... SDSU is 5-2 against teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference and 2-2 versus teams from Florida.
