PEBBLE BEACH, Cal. – South Dakota State men’s golfer Sam Batta finished his summer season, missing the round of 64 at the 118th U.S. Amateur on Tuesday.
After shooting a 77 in the first round Monday, the freshman fired an 81 at the Spyglass Hill Golf Course in the second round to finish with a 158.
Batta pulled off a rare occurrence this summer by qualifying for both the U.S. Amateur and the 71st U.S. Junior Amateur.
David Smith was the last Jackrabbit men’s golfer to qualify for the U.S. Amateur, qualifying in 2009 and 2011. Brian Wynia qualified for the 2006 and 2007 U.S. Junior Amateurs. Geoff Mead was an alternate for the 2007 and 2008 U.S. Amateurs.
