SDSU’s Berg heading to U20 World Championships

Incoming South Dakota State wrestler Bennett Berge will compete next week in the 2022 U20 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
A native of Mantorville, Minnesota, Berge in entered in the 86-kilogram weight class of the men’s freestyle division. Competition gets under way Tuesday morning (Aug. 16) with qualification rounds, followed by semifinal matches later that afternoon. The championship bout is set for the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Berge, who is a member of the Pinnacle Wrestling Club, earned a spot on the 10-member Team USA after winning the 86-kg title at the United World Wrestling World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio, in early June. He will be accompanied and coached in Bulgaria by his brother, current Jackrabbit volunteer assistant coach Brady Berge, with James Green serving as Team USA head coach.
At the prep level, Berge totaled 241 career victories, posting a 124-1 record over his final three seasons at Kasson-Mantorvile High School. He won five consecutive individual state titles at five different weight classes (138, 160, 170, 182, 195), capping his senior season with a 52-0 record.
Fellow Jackrabbit Tanner Sloan is scheduled to compete in the U23 World Championships Oct. 17-23 in Pontevedra, Spain.
