BROOKINGS – South Dakota State senior wide receiver Cade Johnson announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that he has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.
Last week, the Missouri Valley Football Conference announced that it is postponing the fall season to the spring. This may have had something to do with Johnson’s decision to enter the portal. The Big Ten and Pac 12 announced Tuesday that they will also be postponing to the spring as well.
Johnson, who is from Papillion, Nebraska, entered the 2020 season as a NFL prospect after hauling in 28 touchdowns in his first three seasons at SDSU which ranks third in school history. There has been speculation over the past couple years of whether he would transfer to an FBS school, specifically Nebraska where his father, Clester, played. Nebraska has no scholarships available for the 2020 season even if they do play.
Just because Johnson entered his name in the transfer portal does not mean he has to transfer. He can take his name out of the portal and return to SDSU if he wants. But if he does choose to transfer, he will have finished his SDSU career with 162 catches for 2,872 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Johnson set the school record for most receiving touchdowns in a season with 17 in 2018. He was fifth in school history in yards and sixth in receptions. Johnson led the MVFC in receiving the past two seasons.
