TULSA, Okla. – Henry Pohlmeyer finished fifth in the 149-pound division Sunday to lead the South Dakota State University wrestling team on the final day of the 2019 Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championship at BOK Center.

A junior from Johnston, Iowa, Pohlmeyer dropped a 4-1 decision to fourth-seeded Christian Monserrat of West Virginia in the consolation semifinals. The wrestlers were tied at 1-all going into the third period, when Monserrat recorded the lone takedown of the match late in the period and picked up an additional point for a minute of riding time.

Pohlmeyer was scheduled to wrestle Fresno State’s Khristian Olivas in the fifth-place match later in the afternoon session, but Olivas withdrew from the tournament for medical reasons, giving Pohlmeyer the fifth-place standing.

Pohlmeyer, 20-13 overall, was the lone Jackrabbit automatic qualifier for the upcoming NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships out of the two-day Big 12 tournament.

Junior 184-pounder Zach Carlson will receive at-large consideration when the remainder of the NCAA field is announced Tuesday.

Also wrestling Sunday was heavyweight Blake Wolters. The sophomore from Pipestone, Minn., fell 2-1 to Northern Colorado’s Robert Winters in that division’s seventh-place match.

As a team, the Jackrabbits regained 10th place in the team standings with 18.5 points, finishing ahead of Air Force (18 points) and Northern Colorado (17 points).

With seven wrestlers in tonight’s Big 12 finals, Oklahoma State holds a commanding lead with 143.5 points, followed by Iowa State with 113.5 points and four wrestlers in the finals.

Day 1 Results

Pohlmeyer’s bid to reach the finals of the 149-pound weight class at the 2019 Big 12 Conference Wrestling Championship came up short Saturday night during competition at BOK Center.

Pohlmeyer dropped an 8-3 decision to third-seeded Jarrett Degen of Iowa State.

After receiving a first-round bye, the seventh-seeded Pohlmeyer recorded a 5-4 decision over second-seeded Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals during the opening session Saturday morning. It was Pohlmeyer’s second win over Thomsen this season.

With seven automatic qualifiers allocated to the Big 12 in the 149-pound division, Pohlmeyer has secured his second consecutive berth in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after qualifying at 141 pounds in 2018.

In other action Saturday night, three Jackrabbits split a pair of matches.

In the 157-pound weight class, Colten Carlson notched his second win of the tournament with a 10-4 decision over Northern Colorado Jordan Robison. Carlson later went down to the wire against fourth-seeded Wyatt Sheets of Oklahoma State, but Sheets scored a takedown just before the buzzer at the end of regulation for a 7-5 victory.

At 184 pounds, Zach Carlson turned in his second bonus-point victory of the day with a 17-0 technical fall against Air Force’s Jake Thompson. Later in the session, Carlson dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision to sixth-seeded Will Sumner of Utah Valley.

Wolters scored an 11-4 decision over Kayne Hutchinson in his first bout of the night, before being edged 1-0 by fifth-seeded Brian Andrews of Wyoming later in the session.

In the team standings, the Jackrabbits slipped one spot to 11th with 14.5 points. Oklahoma State is first with 129.5 points and seven finalists, followed by Iowa State with 92.5 points and Northern Iowa with 62.5 points.
