Searching for a story

BROOKINGS – Throughout the day Thursday, the Brookings Public Library was the place to be for bookworms hunting for another good read. The Friends of the Library Book Sale began Wednesday night for members of Friends of the Library with more than 220 boxes worth of books spread out across tables in the Cooper room of the library.

Sandra Ballou, president of the Friends of the Library, said the first night of the sale went well, with upwards of $700 in sales: “Boxes of books went out the door.”

The sale continues through to Sunday, Feb. 26, during library hours.

Sisters Mary Beth Wiese (left) and Susan Nachtigal (right), who was visiting from Massachusetts, were among those riffling through the books Thursday afternoon. Nachtigal joked that she was looking for “novels for the airplane or the blizzard.”

Carol Fryer, shown in the background of the top photo, was looking for books for herself, her mother and grandchildren. “I was just driving home from work and I saw the sign, so I thought I’d come stop in. I have 13 grandchildren, so I always look for books for birthday or Christmas presents because they love books. That was kind of the main reason,” she said, five biographies in hand.

Books weren’t the only thing some had their sights on. Ashley Ragsdale and 3-year-old son Harrison searched the CDs for sale.

“We come every year to see what kind of kids’ books they have and anything else we need. My husband’s the percussion professor, so I always peruse the music to make sure there’s something we don’t have.”
