Second jail open house scheduled

BROOKINGS – County commissioners and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office hope that a newly scheduled public meeting to gather input from members of the community regarding the planned county jail expansion project will attract more attendants.

Scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 3, the meeting would allow for more public feedback before commissioners make a motion on the future of the project the day after, during the regularly scheduled County Commission meeting.

Then, the county would consider two resolutions: one for the project itself and another for the issuing of bonds.

The county is still seeking a bond amount closer to the $5.5 million commissioners originally expected the expansion to cost. As of yet, the total costs for the project are expected to reach more than $10 million.

The jail expansion committee and jail staff would present the information to the public at the meeting, with the architects, the BKV Group, not on hand. That’s because the kinds of questions suited to BKV would be better suited for another time, if the county proceeds with the expansion and renovations of the jail.
