BROOKINGS – Sarah Lippert, Brookings volunteer connections coordinator for the Helpline Center, recently announced the following opportunities for area residents to become more involved in the community through volunteering.
Lutheran Social Services - Better Together in Brookings
Better Together is a program of Lutheran Social Services designed to improve quality of life activities for older adults in Brookings. To help carry out the program in Brookings, LSS has partnered with the Volunteer Service Bank. This organization, embarking on its 25th year of service will assist with local coordination and will help both volunteers and seniors get started.
In the program, trained volunteers will be matched with an older adult based on similar interests and schedule. Volunteer and older adult matches will spend four hours per month together going on outings, talking, pursuing hobbies, and other relationship-building activities.
With nearly half of people aged 65 and older in South Dakota living alone, there is need to use volunteers to help maintain or reestablish a connection to their community.
Brookings Salvation Army, Share the Warmth spring clean up
Salvation Army’s Share the Warmth Project is holding a spring clean-up donation drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Faith Reformed Church. Volunteers are needed to help receive donations, as well as count and organize donated items of winter apparel.

Hillcrest Elementary School PTA, Hillfest volunteer
The 32nd annual Hillfest raffle and carnival fundraiser will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 13.
Each year, Hillfest raises thouands of dollars for the programs and classrooms at Hillcrest Elementary School, as well as community-wide programs, but we literally cannot do this alone.
It takes many volunteers to make this family friendly event happen. The duties are easy and fun. Automatic updates and reminders will be emailed to everyone who signs up
