VOLGA – A semi-truck went into a ditch on Tuesday morning south of Volga, causing $37,000 in damage along with a fuel leak.
The crash was reported at 9:50 a.m. near the intersection of 464th Avenue and 212th Street.
Andrii Abramov, 28, of Canistota was driving the 2005 Freightliner medium duty truck with DCT flatbed trailer, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring reported that another vehicle approached the roadway from a field approach. Abramov believed the vehicle was going to enter the roadway and attempted to avoid a collision by entering the ditch.
Once in the ditch, the trailer became detached from the truck and struck the truck in the door and fuel tank. The impact caused approximately 50 gallons of diesel to leak from the tank into the ditch.
The Volga Fire Department responded and was able to contain the fuel spill. Brookings County Emergency Management also responded to the incident.
Sebring said the incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office.
