135 new COVID-19 cases, no new deaths reported in South Dakota Thursday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 135 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in South Dakota Thursday.

Seven of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,178 total cases (four new confirmed and three new probable): 4,026 of those people have recovered (18 new), with 115 active cases (down by 11) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 13,457 people have tested negative in Brookings County (27 new), and 150 people (one new) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are three COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the SDDOH website reported Thursday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 122,532 (135 new – 108 confirmed plus 27 probable) as of midday Thursday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 1,722 are classified as active (down by 67 from Wednesday). As of Thursday, 118,848 people have recovered (201 new), 7,350 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (13 new), 115 people are currently hospitalized (up by 12) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,962 people have died (no change).

The SDDOH website reports 343,011 people (787 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

Increases in positive cases Thursday include, but are not limited to, five in Brown County, 18 in Codington, 11 in Lincoln, 35 in Minnehaha and seven in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Thursday that 582,065 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 326,860 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 21,176 vaccine doses have been administered to 13,218 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Thursday, 37.7% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 46.7% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

More than 54% of the state population age 16 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, according to the SDDOH website, and 45% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
