429 new COVID-19 cases, six new deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Tuesday reported 429 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths in South Dakota.

Seven of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

Tuesday’s report includes data from 1 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Friday, South Dakota Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon said in a Tweet. Wednesday’s report will include numbers from Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Brookings County cases have risen to 5,011 total cases (two new confirmed and five new probable): 4,795 of those people have recovered (20 new) with 178 active cases (down by 13) and 38 deaths (no change). A total of 153 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “high” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 148,249 (277 new confirmed and 152 new probable) as of midday Tuesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 6,539 are classified as active (down by 50 from Friday). As of Tuesday, 139,533 people have recovered (473 new), 7,572 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (24 new), 202 people are currently hospitalized (down by 11) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,177 people with COVID have died (six new).

The new deaths, two women and four men, are being reported in Brown, Hughes, Jackson, Meade, Pennington and Walworth counties. The age ranges of the deceased are two 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and three in the 80-plus years category.

The SDDOH website reported midday Tuesday that 792,186 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 426,001 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

In Brookings County, 31,110 vaccine doses have been administered to 16,873 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Tuesday, 48.1% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 56.6% of those 12 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

The SDDOH reports 64.8% of the state population age 12 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, and 59.2% of the state’s 12-and-older population has completed its vaccination series.
