BROOKINGS – Brookings Police are warning the public that numerous bicycles have been stolen recently.
“We’ve had several bikes that have been reported stolen throughout the city of Brookings and no specific area,” Lt. Marci Gebers said.
The thefts have occurred all over town, including “some thefts from outside of the schools,” Gebers said.
Bicycles of all kinds have been stolen, but more seem to be in the adult or older teen-range, she said.
Gebers had some advice to keep your two-wheeled transportation safe.
“It’s a good idea to lock your bike up if it’s gonna be unattended, because usually the bikes that are stolen are not locked up,” Gebers said.
Record the serial number from the bike and take a picture of it from several angles to help law enforcement identify it if it is stolen, Gebers said.
The serial number is stamped on the bike.
“Oftentimes, it’s like on the underside of the bike, kind of near where the pedals go,” Gebers said.
If anyone has information about these thefts, contact the Brookings Police at 605-692-2113, contact Crime Stoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or call 605-692-STOP (7867).
