S.F. Brewers beat Cubs 4-3

Game tied 1-1 going into the ninth

BROOKINGS – Ian Strum and Jesse Munsterman hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth and Bryce Ahrendt pitched a complete game as the Sioux Falls Brewers beat the Cubs 4-3 in a Sioux Empire League amateur baseball game Sunday evening at Bob Shelden Field.

The Brewers’ Tom Hill stroked a one-out triple in the ninth and quickly scored on Jose Martinez’s sacrifice fly to put the Brewers on top 2-1.

Strum drove an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field and Munsterman, who finished the game 3-for-5, added a shot to left of his own two pitches later to make it 4-1.

The insurance runs proved to be key, as the Cubs rallied in the bottom of the inning.

Jeff Fish got it going with a double. JaColby Anderson drilled a 1-1 pitch over the fence in center to cut the deficit to 4-3.

However, Ahrendt got a strikeout, a flyout and a groundout to end the game. He gave up three runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Marcus Heemstra took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. He also went the distance.

Brookings turned four double plays.

Fish and Jared Tschetter both finished 2-for-4.

Munsterman sparked a two-out rally in the third with a single and then stole second. Charlie Dubanoski followed with a sharply-struck RBI single to open the scoring.

The Cubs came back in the bottom of the frame as Skyler Cary singled, stole second and sprinted home on Sam McMacken’s one-out hit up the middle.

The Cubs (10-5, 1-3) face the Sioux Falls Saints on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Harmodon and then play host to the Aurora A’s on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Note: All five extra-base hits in the game came in the ninth inning.
