S.F. Lincoln rallies to beat Bobcats, 7-5

SIOUX FALLS – Third-seeded Lincoln scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to grab the lead and added an insurance run in the sixth during a 7-5 defeat of 14th-seeded Brookings in the first round of the Class A High School Baseball Playoffs on Friday night at Harmodon.

Max Burchill did not allow an earned run in a complete-game performance on the mound, giving up five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Lincoln committed five errors and Brookings had four as just three of the 12 runs score were earned.

Oliver Lockwood-Powell went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Patriots.

Alex Woost opened the bottom of the fourth frame with a double and quickly scored on Nick Kemper’s triple to tie the game at 5-5. Zach Allender followed with a sacrifice fly to give Lincoln the lead for good at 6-5.

In the sixth, Sam Siegel reached on a two-out error and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a Lockwood-Powell hit.

The Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the first.

Dalton Vanderloo led off the frame with a double and scored on Lockwood-Powell’s one-out single.

With two away, Tada Naoe reached on an error. Lockwood-Powell and Naoe then pulled off a double steal, and a throwing error allowed both runners to scamper home. Avry Rice walked and stole second, before scoring on an error on Woost’s batted ball.

The Bobcats countered with five runs in the third.

Cole Mahlum drew a walk but was later caught stealing; however, Tyler Kreutner and Tanner Shepardson both reached base via errors. Parker Rykhus got Brookings on the board with an RBI single.

Ryan McMacken then reached on an error, as Shepardson sprinted home. Rhett Zelinsky’s walk loaded the bases.

Justin Devine stepped up with a run-scoring hit. Brock Luze hit into a elder’s choice, scoring McMacken to knot the game at 4-all.

Brady Ammann’s sacrifice fly to center field plated Zelinsky and gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.

Kreutner, Shepardson and Zelinsky each added a hit in the game for Brookings.

Zelinsky took the loss, allowing six runs – three earned – on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Luze gave up one run – unearned – on one hit in an inning of work.

Brookings finished the season with a 5-13 record.
