BROOKINGS – Brookings County Salvation Army is gearing up for its annual Share the Warmth winter clothing distribution, and though the event will look different this year, the local group of volunteers is working hard to make sure that Brookings County residents have the winter gear they need to face the cold South Dakota winter.
“In the past, our distribution events have taken place in Faith Reformed Church and have looked like a store in a sanctuary where families could ‘shop’ for their winter coats,” Chairperson Shayna Rohl said. “This year we have redesigned the event to be a drive-by distribution. Families will pre-register by Sept. 28, listing sizes for each member of the family. Volunteers will then bag up the winter gear for each family in advance of the event and have it ready for distribution on Oct. 14 and 15.”
There will be indoor and outdoor volunteer opportunities with social distancing, masks and gloves available.
To pre-register for the event, families should visit Brookings Salvation Army on Facebook and complete the form provided there. Completed forms can be emailed to [email protected]
The event distribution is arranged alphabetically, and families will pick up during the time scheduled by last name on Oct. 14 and 15.
Because families will pre-register for the event, the Brookings County Salvation Army families do not need to line up early for the event because their items will be ready and waiting for them. Registered children will receive a coat, snow pants, boots, gloves, hat and scarf as available; registered adults will receive items as available.
“Anyone who has experienced a South Dakota winter knows that a winter coat is a necessity, and we want to make sure that no one in our community goes without one this winter. Brookings has faced many new challenges in 2020, but facing winter without a coat does not have to be one of them” Rohl said.
Brookings Salvation Army will continue to collect coats, snow pants, boots and other winter clothing up until the distribution. A truck has been parked at the First Bank & Trust main branch to collect donations.
Brookings County Salvation Army receives support from Brookings Area United Way, the annual Red Kettle campaign, and the generosity of many local individuals. Those looking to register for winter clothing, volunteer, or donate for the event can visit Brookings Salvation Army on Facebook for details.
