BROOKINGS – A Brookings man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and assault, among other charges, after authorities say he broke into an Elkton building and pulled a knife and fought with a resident who confronted him.

The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Dustin Strom. He was arrested early this morning on suspicion of burglary, aggravated assault, DUI-fourth offense, driving with a revoked driver’s license, and intentional damage to property, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said. He is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center awaiting bond.

Sebring said deputies were called to the 100 block of Second Street in Elkton at 3 a.m. Friday. An Elkton resident reported a man breaking into a building there.

“It was found that the resident next door had seen the suspect breaking into the building and confronted him,” Sebring said. “The suspect pulled a knife on the resident, then dropped it, and a physical altercation took place. The suspect then fled the scene. No one was injured in the altercation.”

Brookings police located Strom in the 200 block of Round Up Circle in Brookings at 4:35 a.m. Friday and arrested him, Sebring said.
