Shirley Ann Strande, 80, of Brookings, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at home under hospice care.  

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings.  Visitation is from 9:30 - 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.  Following the funeral service, Shirley’s body will be donated to the USD Medical School.  Eidsness Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Shirley was born on July 20, 1936, in Madison, the daughter of Clifford and Anna (Johnson) Hanson. 

She attended Nunda grade school through the sixth grade.  After moving to Volga, with her family, she continued her education at the Volga High School and graduated in 1954.  

She was then employed at Oines Implement as a bookkeeper, and the Volga Co-Op Oil.  She married Russell Strande on Oct. 19, 1956, in Volga. Shirley was employed at the J.C. Penny Store in Madison, from 1958-1961 and in Aberdeen, from 1962-1964.  In 1974, Shirley was employed as accounting clerk for the Brookings Medical Clinic until her retirement in 1997.

 Shirley was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She was on the volunteer list for FLCW, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls, and a member of the Brookings Blood Bank, where she was a gallon donor.  

Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and music events, and keeping photo albums up-to-date.  

She also enjoyed traveling and baking Lefse with her husband for their family and friends.  Shirley was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.

 Survivors include her husband, Russell of Brookings; children, Keith Strande of Brookings, Karlene (Kevin) Strande-Opland of Mechanicsville, Va., Curtis (Mary) Strande of Junction City, Kan., and Kent (Susie) Strande of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; a step-granddaughter and one sister, Gloria Sonnenburg of Brookings.   She was preceded in death by her a brother, Maynard; and three sisters, Wanda, Ione, and one in infancy.
