Shirley Wiese, 90, of Brookings, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018 at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, at Rude’s Funeral Home, with a prayer service beginning at 60 p.m. 

Shirley Ann Norland was born on Aug. 14, 1928, in Sheldon, Iowa, the eldest of three daughters born to Chester S. and Alice (Merrill) Norland. After graduating from Sanborn High School in 1945, Shirley continued her education at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating from Nurses Training in 1949. She began her career as a registered nurse working for an orthopedic surgeon in Sioux City. It was there she married Gilbert W. Wiese on Nov. 9, 1952, after which they made their home in Brookings. A year later Shirley resumed her nursing career working at the Brookings Hospital. In 1967, Shirley assumed the role of Head Nurse for Student Health Services at South Dakota State University in Brookings, a position she held until retiring in 1990.

Shirley was a longtime member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. For many years, she also served as a Sunday School teacher. Additionally, Shirley was active in the Brookings County Nurses Organization and the South Dakota Nurses Association, serving on both the District Ten and the South Dakota Nurses Association legislative committees. She also enjoyed her work as a board member of the South Dakota Nurses Association.

She is survived by her sisters Gayle Riessen (Kenneth) of Spencer, Iowa, and Bethany Sauser (Michael) of Anthon, Iowa; sons David Wiese of Waurika, Oklahoma and Dale Wiese (Stephanie) of San Antonio, Texas; daughters Mary Beth Wiese of Sinai, South Dakota, Susan Nachtigal (James) of Holden, Massachusetts, and Wendy Folwaczny (Carl) of Geneva, New York. Shirley is also survived by one granddaughter, Charissa (Wiese) Fuller (John) of Plymouth, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren; three step- great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert on March 10, 2002; sisters-in-law Vera Rogers and Clara Nussbaum; and brothers-in-law, Art Nussbaum and Charlie Gundelach.
