Sioux Valley beats Dell Rapids 60-53 in finale

LeBrun leads Fliers past Arlington, 62-45

BROOKINGS – The final period of the 24th annual Michael J. Entringer Boys’ Basketball Scholarship Classic may have been the most action packed as Sioux Valley pulled away from Dell Rapids for a 60-53 victory on Saturday evening at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Cossacks shot just 33.3 percent (14-of-42) through three quarters as the score stood at 40-all.

However, Sioux Valley opened the final frame with 10 consecutive points.

Trevor Hanson, the game’s MVP, got it going with a bucket in the paint and Trevor Olson followed with a 3-pointer.

Ryan Schuster converted a traditional 3-point play, before Hanson’s two free throws made it 50-40 with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

“You could kind of sense that it was going to come because it was a rough time getting the ball in the bucket in the third quarter,” said Cossack coach Bill Vincent, whose team made seven of its 11 shots in the fourth. “It was just a matter of time before TO will hit a bucket or two; he did a better job at turning the corner and getting to the rim. Jake Schneider was huge – he found TO on the back cut for the big assist, he hit the open 3 late out of our Kentucky set and he took two huge charges that wiped points off the board.”

The Quarriers countered with five straight – Mason Schmidt hit a trey and Jeffrey Schuch added a pair at the foul line – however, Schneider scored on an assist from Hanson down low and Olson had a 3-point play to again make it a 10-point game at 55-45 with 4 minutes to play.

Dell Rapids twice pulled within seven points after that, but Schneider canned a 3 and Olson had a layup to keep Sioux Valley in control.

“It was a good one; it’s always good to play these guys, it’s always fun,” said Hanson.

The senior finished with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting. He completed the double-double with 15 rebounds – the most by any player in Saturday’s eight games.

“This is what Trevor can do when he stays out of foul trouble,” Vincent said. “Early in the season, he was in a lot of foul trouble but we were also asking a lot out of him defensively in hopes that, come March, we’re a little more prepared on the defensive end.”

Hanson was coming off a school-record 47-point performance against St. Francis Indian on Wednesday, breaking the previous mark of 44 set by Dale Meyer in 1966.

Olson added 19 points against the Quarriers.

Max Nielson dished out a classic-best eight assists.

Sioux Valley trailed 10-4 5 minutes in but was up 13-12 after a quarter and pushed the advantage to 10 points three times in the second – the last coming at 31-21. Dell Rapids pulled within 31-25 at halftime and eventually pulled even late in the third.

“It was kind of a game of momentums, like it typically is,” Vincent added. “I thought we had a good run late in the second quarter but then didn’t close the quarter – they got the last couple buckets out of it and then they opened the second half with a good run, as well, so then we’re back in a ballgame.

“Defensively, we were really solid tonight. We kept defending; played good, clean defense and position defense.”

For Dell Rapids, Schuch had 17 points, 12 boards and five assists. Schmidt totaled 19 points and six rebounds.

Sioux Valley (5-1) faces McCook Central/Montrose in the first round of the Big East Conference Tournament on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. in Salem. Dell Rapids (2-2) plays host to Beresford on Thursday.
