Sioux Valley clips Castlewood

VOLGA – The Sioux Valley boys’ basketball team started fast and closed strong in its 72-52 Lake Central Conference win over Castlewood on Tuesday night.

The Cossacks scored 21 of the game’s first 25 points and led 27-10 after a quarter.

They went 11-of-16 from the field in the opening period.

The advantage reached 19 following Noah Puetz’s bucket to open the second; however, the Warriors battled back, pulling within 35-29 at halftime.

The home team retook control with an 11-2 spurt in the third stanza.

Max Nielson got it going with a layup following an Oliver Vincent steal. Ryan Schuster and Vincent followed with back-to-back buckets.

After Castlewood’s Noah Wiersma scored, Schuster canned a 3-pointer and Puetz added a steal and layup to make it 48-33 with 3:38 remaining in the period.

The Warriors never got closer than 11 after that.

“I thought we had a good first quarter, and then at times we were flat,” said Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent. “I don’t know if that was maybe because of the odd week with different types of practices and many days with no practice. And some of that is a credit to Castlewood, things that they took away.

“I thought we kept (Brandon) Benike in check, especially early on. Noah Puetz did a nice job out there with that defensive assignment. I thought when the ball was spinning for us that we shot a higher percentage and got some good looks.

“But maybe the early lead just had us go a little bit flat there for a while, or maybe it was just the week off – who knows. We’ll be excited to get back out Thursday in a Big East game at Garretson.”

Schuster posted a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists.

Nielson added 19 points, six dimes, four steals and four boards.

Puetz totaled 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 18 minutes of action. He left the game with an apparent lower-leg injury late in the third.

Parker Puetz contributed nine points and Vincent five.

Sioux Valley shot an even 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field.

For the Warriors, Wiersma had 14 points and six boards. Benike, who grabbed eight rebounds, and Kyler Tvedt added 11 markers apiece.

Sioux Valley concludes the regular season traveling to Garretson on Thursday and then playing host to Flandreau Indian School on Tuesday.

Castlewood (7-10, 2-4) is host to Estelline/Hendricks in its finale Friday.
