Sioux Valley goes 1-1

A seventh-inning rally lifted the Cossacks to a 4-3 win over Chester Area/Colman-Egan/ Flandreau on Sunday as Sioux Valley went 1-1 over the weekend in high school baseball action after dropping a 9-2 decision to Beresford on Saturday.

The Cossacks enter region play this weekend with both site and opponent to be determined.

Sunday

• Sioux Valley 4, CCEF 3

FLANDREAU – Sioux Valley broke open a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and then hung on for a 4-3 win.

Zack Puetz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Cossacks’ eight-hit attack.

Cole Gross added a single and double with an RBI as Nick Strasburg and Daymein Lucas each drove in a run with a base hit.

Chase Ringheimer had Sioux Valley’s other hit and scored twice.

Nate Kneebone had a pair of hits – including a double – and two RBIs to pace the home team.

Billy Steufen also doubled while Brayden Schneider and Devin Sopko each added a single as Kasen Grengs scored all three runs.

Strasburg earned the win on the mound as he gave up two runs – one earned – on five hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Gross picked up the save as he walked one in the seventh and allowed an unearned run.

Grengs suffered the loss as he went the distance – giving up eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts and two earned runs.

Saturday

• Beresford 9, Sioux Valley 2

VOLGA – Eli Skoglund went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Watchdogs’ 11-hit attack.

Zach Erickson added two hits and three RBIs. Tyler Kropuenske, who doubled, tallied two hits and two RBIs. Beau VanGelder contributed a pair of singles and Sam Nelson doubled.

Kropuenske gave up two runs on five hits and five walks with eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

The Cossacks’ Brayden Havrevold went 2-for-2 and Zack Puetz finished 2-for-4. Strasburg doubled and drove in a run. Alec Bultje had the team’s other RBI.

Trailing 2-1, Beresford scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
