Sioux Valley, Lake Preston and Arlington post wins at Entringer

COLMAN – Eighteen teams took to the floor in the 2017 Girls’ Entringer Scholarship Classic on Saturday in Colman as nine games were played out in two gyms over 7 1/2 hours.

The Boys’ Entringer Classic tips off at Noon on Saturday, Dec. 30, at Brookings High School.

 Sioux Valley 69, Elkton-Lake Benton 51

The Cossacks scored the first 21 points of the game to build a 28-5 lead after a quarter and then cruised to a 69-51 win over the Lady Elks.

Carly Granum dropped five 3-pointers over the first eight minutes on the way to a game-high 29 points as she was named MVP of the game.

Sioux Valley built its lead to 46-18 at halftime before the Lady Elks cut into the deficit over the final 16 minutes by outscoring the Cossacks, 33-23, in the second half.

Miakken Vincent added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists while Lynsey Stevens chipped in with 12 points, four boards and three dimes as Sioux Valley improved to 3-0 on the season.

Samantha Schindler led Elkton-Lake Benton with 18 points and four steals. Rachel Colgrove knocked down five 3-pointers for 15 points, while Callie Otkin contributed 13 points and dished out four assists as the Lady Elks dropped to 1-2.

Tonight, Sioux Valley travels to Parker to face the Pheasants in a Big East Conference matchup, while the Lady Elks are back in Colman against the Hawks in a Dakota Valley Conference game.

 Flandreau 43, Deubrook Area 29

The Fliers limited Deubrook Area to single digits in all four quarters to run their record to 3-1 on the season with the 43-29 win, while handing the Dolphins their first loss of the season.

Flandreau scored the first six points of the game en route to a 13-5 lead after a quarter and then built the lead to 11, 20-9, with two minutes left in the second. The Dolphins went 4-for-4 from the line over the final two minutes to get within 20-13 at halftime.

Deubrook Area crept within six points on two different occasions in the third quarter – a 3-pointer by Cassie Quail and then a basket by Cortney Bauman – before the Fliers closed the frame on a 9-3 run to lead 33-21 through three.

Marianna Pavlis’ putback with 1:23 to play gave Flandreau its largest lead of the contest at 17, 43-26.

Kathy Parsley scored 12 points, dished out two assists and came up with one steal to earn MVP honors, while Tishara Hardy added a game-high 14 points.

Shalyee DeBeer’s 12 points and three steals led the Dolphins, who dropped to 4-1. Bauman finished with nine points and five rebounds as Flandreau won the battle of the boards, 29-22.

Tonight, Deubrook Area heads to Chester to face the Flyers while Flandreau travels to Castlewood on Tuesday to take on the Warriors.

 Lake Preston 61, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 32

The Divers, trailing 11-10 after the first eight minutes, turned up the defense and earned their first win of the season with the 61-32 triumph over ORR.

Lake Preston went on a 22-9 run in the second quarter to lead 32-20 at halftime and then extended the lead to 45-28 through three quarters to improve to 1-2 on the season.

The Divers came up with 17 steals as the Raiders turned the ball over 33 times to fall to 0-4 overall.

Ashlyn DeKnikker posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with five steals and an assist for Lake Preston. Meriah Flegel added 21 points, nine boards, three steals and a dime as Lindsay Hillestad dished out four assists, along with five steals, six points and eight rebounds.

Khloe Tieman led the Raiders with nine points, while Victoria Malisch chipped in with seven points, 10 rebounds and two assists as ORR outrebounded the Divers, 40-35. Avery Hyland and Jenessa Schiernbeck scored seven points apiece.

Tonight, ORR travels to Arlington to take on the Cardinals while the Divers play host to Estelline.

 Arlington 53, Garretson 47

The Cardinals used a 13-6 second-quarter scoring surge to take control en route to their first win of the season – a 53-47 defeat of Garretson.

The Blue Dragons led 15-14 after a quarter before Arlington took a 27-21 halftime lead. Garretson regained the lead, 30-29, in the third quarter, but the Cards closed the frame with an 8-4 run to lead 37-34 heading into the final frame.

An old-fashioned three-point play by the Dragons’ Kyley Greenhoff to open the fourth tied the game at 37-37 before Arlington pulled away with a 13-2 run in a 3-minute span to open up a 50-39 advantage and Garretson never got closer than the six-point final margin.

Madysn Gilbertson led a balanced Cardinal scoring attack with 15 points, while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds to go along with five steals. Marissa Baker added 11 points and Jayna Haufschild finished with 10 points as Arlington improved to 1-3 on the season.

Greenhoff led Garretson, 2-2, with 15 points before fouling out. Aftyn Heitkamp contributed 12 points, three assists and three steals as Rachel Kindt chipped in with 10 markers.

Tonight, the Cardinals play host to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.

 Dell Rapids St. Mary 43, Estelline 40

The Lady Redmen rallied to beat DRSM on Tuesday night, but the roles were reversed on Saturday as the Cardinals overcame a 12-5 first-quarter deficit before going on for the 43-40 win.

Estelline led 12-10 after the first quarter but trailed 19-17 at halftime. DRSM pushed its advantage to 33-26 through three before the Lady Redmen stormed back and went up 38-37 following a Marissa Golas basket with 3:08 to play.

But Cassandra Geraets went coast-to-coast following a steal to put the Cardinals back in the lead and they knocked down free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Sydney Cook posted a double-double of 10 points and 16 rebounds for DRSM, 3-1. Ella Heinitz added 12 points, four steals and a pair of assists.

Golas finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Estelline, which dropped to 1-2. Tiffany Vohlken chipped in with 12 points and seven boards while Brinn Gegalka pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.

The Lady Redmen travel to Lake Preston tonight for a Dakota Valley Conference matchup with the Divers.

The Cardinals scored the first six points and led by as many as nine points in the first quarter en route to a 39-31 win over Colman-Egan.

Deuel led 22-12 at half and 29-19 through three as the Cardinals won their first game of the season against three losses.

Colman-Egan closed to within six points, 33-27, following a pair of Haleigh Nicol free throws with 3 minutes left in the game, but Britney Lovre hit back-to-back 3 pointers within the next minute to push it back to a 12-point edge for the Cardinals.

Kendra Damm posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for Deuel, 1-3. Lovre finished with 12 points, seven boards and seven steals while Jaydyn TeGantvoort added 11 points.

Mackenzie Hemmer had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who dropped to 2-2. Katie Hannasch pulled down a game-high 14 boards as Madison Voelker came up with seven steals.

The Hawks play host to Elkton-Lake Benton tonight.
