Sioux Valley wins cheer competition at BHS Invitational

BROOKINGS – The Cossacks added another title to their resume on Saturday at the Swiftel Center – the Brookings High School Invitational cheer championship.

Sioux Valley – the 10-time defending Class A Cheer Grand Champion – scored 248 points to outpace second-place Sioux Falls Washington’s 237-point total. Dell Rapids and Harrisburg tied for third with 221 points, while Brandon Valley was fifth with 219, followed by Brookings in sixth with 213.5.

"I think it was the first time that we have won the Brookings Invite" said Cossack head coach Casie King. "We are really pushing for high difficulty scores this year, so we were pretty excited to earn the score from Saturday.

"It was our highest score this season and from here on out, our focus is going to be on cleaning things up and executing well."

Considering the adversity the Bobcats went through leading up to their home invite, a sixth-place finish with 213.5 points wasn’t bad.

"The team performed exceptionally well considering the adversities presented to them this week – we had three girls out due to injuries and other circumstances – all happened within the three days prior to our competition," said Bobcat head coach Amy Hemmer. "We were still rearranging stunt groups at 8 a.m. the morning of the competition. The team came together and fought hard to do the best they could. Given the circumstances, I couldn't be more proud of how they handled themselves.

"We have a quick turnaround and head to the Huron Invite on Tuesday – we will not have our full team back by that point, so we'll be continuing with our adjustments made on Saturday."

In the dance competition, Dakota Valley continued its dominance in 2017 as the Panthers scored 283.5 to easily outdistance the field.

Sioux Falls Washington placed second with an average of 264.33 points, followed by Brandon Valley (252.33), Huron (245.83), Watertown (238.17), Yankton (233.5), Sioux Falls Lincoln (230.83) and Sioux Falls Roosevelt (229.67).

The Bobcats placed 13th with a 209.33 average – finishing seventh in Hip Hop with 210 points; placing eighth in Pom with 208 points; and notching 210 points for ninth in Kick.

"We had the highest score of the season, unfortunately, we had some unforeseen deductions that set us back further than we expected," said Bobcat head dance coach Ellie Livingston. "We will keep moving forward – getting our technical elements stronger and cleaning up each routine.

"After our invite on Tuesday in Huron, we have a little longer until our next invite to focus and clean, which is needed."

Tuesday’s competition at the Huron Arena begins at 5:30 p.m.
