BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings has named Matthew Sommerfeld, from Omaha, Nebraska, as the new airport manager, according to City Engineer Jackie Lanning.

Sommerfeld was hired after Ryan O’Rear, the previous airport manager, left in June to become an airport operations coordinator at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas.

Sommerfeld’s first day with the City of Brookings was Monday.

Sommerfeld was previously a flight coordination specialist with Jet Linx Aviation in Omaha, Nebraska.

In that position, he was the primary point of contact for all Jet Linx Based teams and fleet management teams, worked with international handlers, coordinated flight stops, customs clearances, and aircraft flight logistics.

Prior to his employment with Jet Linx Aviation, Sommerfeld was airport director with the Miles City Airport in Montana, where he managed airport operations, daily airfield inspections, snow removal, budgeting, and working with governmental agencies.

Sommerfeld says he enjoys all aspects of aviation and is excited to become the Brookings airport manager.

Sommerfeld and his wife, Michelle, and daughter, Kinlee look forward to being a part of the Brookings community.

“Matthew’s professionalism, work ethic, enthusiasm and experience will be an asset to the Brookings Regional Airport. The City of Brookings is excited to welcome Matthew Sommerfeld as our new airport manager,” Lanning said.
