Brookings native Josh Sorbe, a junior on the South Dakota swimming team, was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team for District 6, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Sorbe, Rumrill honored for academics

Brookings native Josh Sorbe, a junior on the South Dakota swimming team, was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team for District 6, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 

South Dakota State’s Wyatt Rumrill was also honored.

Sorbe maintains a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in political science and economics. He was recently awarded a $30,000 Truman Scholarship, the nation’s premier graduate fellowship for those pursuing careers in public service.

In the pool, heearned three top-13 placings at the Summit League Championships. He had a ninth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16 minutes, 36.3. He placed 10th in the 400 IM in 4:08.44.

Rumrill, a native of Pierre, finished his senior year swimming the breaststroke and medley events while earning a 4.0 GPA as a human biology major.

Rumrill set school records in the 100 breast (55.11), 200 breast (2:00.26), 100 IM (51.78) and 400 medley relay (3:19.18) at the 2019 Summit League Championships.

Eligible student-athletes must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average, have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests, completed one full calendar year at the institution, reached sophomore athletic eligibility and be nominated by their institutions’ sports information director.

After being named to the 10-man district squad, Sorbe and Rumrill will appear on the national ballot for Academic All-America.
