PIERRE – The number of South Dakotans who have tested positive for COVID-19 has risen to 187 as of midday Friday, up 22 from Thursday’s data, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.
Brookings County cases remain at two positive tests, and both people have recovered.
Of those 187 cases, 17 people have been hospitalized at some point, two people have died, and 69 have recovered.
Minnehaha County is the county with the most positive tests, at 68 with 15 recovered. That number jumped from 54 on Thursday. Beadle County has 21 positive tests with 17 recovered, and there are 19 cases in Lincoln County, with three recovered.
Secretary of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon said during a briefing that she would investigate irregularities with the Health Department’s count at the county level.
There is substantial community spread in Minnehaha, Lincoln, Beadle and Lawrence counties in South Dakota, and 13 other counties have minimal to moderate community spread.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. Older adults and people with existing health problems are among those particularly susceptible to more severe illness, including pneumonia.
