BROOKINGS – South Dakota State and Oral Roberts (28-11, 16-2) split a weekend set – the Jackrabbits won 5-2 Saturday and the Golden Eagles prevailed by a 14-5 margin Sunday – as the visitors won the Summit League baseball series 2-1 at Erv Huether Field.

South Dakota State, Oral Roberts split weekend set

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State and Oral Roberts (28-11, 16-2) split a weekend set – the Jackrabbits won 5-2 Saturday and the Golden Eagles prevailed by a 14-5 margin Sunday – as the visitors won the Summit League baseball series 2-1 at Erv Huether Field.

ORU’s only other league loss is a 5-2 setback to Western Illinois on April 1.

SDSU (16-19, 9-9) plays host to Dakota State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Sunday

• Oral Roberts 14, SDSU 5

The Golden Eagles belted four home runs and scored at least three runs in three separate innings en route to clinching the series win.

Noah Cummings hit a three-RBI homer – his 11th long ball of the year – and Brent Williams followed with a solo shot – his 10th – in the first inning. Nick Roark also forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0.

In the second, SDSU’s Tony Kjolsing blasted a two-run homer – his first round-tripper of the year. Philip Jacobson added a two-run single in the third to pull the Jackrabbits within 5-4.

Cummings’ second hit was a run-scoring single in the seventh, as he finished with four RBIs. Williams added an RBI single before Trevor McCutchin connected for a grand slam to break the game open, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 11-4.

Sam Grellner added a three-run homer in the ninth to make it 14-4.

SDSU’s Matt Johnson went deep in the bottom of the ninth to provide for the final margin. He has nine long balls this year.

McCutchin, Roark and Hernandez added a pair of hits apiece for ORU.

Golden Eagle starter Miguel Ausua (7-2) earned the win after giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

For SDSU, Matt Johnson finished 3-for-4 and Newt Johnson was 3-for-5. Jacobson contributed a pair of hits.

Luke Ringhofer went 0-for-2 but walked three times as he has now reached base safely in 31 consecutive games.

Hunter Even lasted six innings despite the rough opening inning, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks with six punchouts.

The Jackrabbits scored a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to snap an 11-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles.

Oral Roberts struck first as Sam Grellner was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth, advanced on an error and then scored on a botched pickoff attempt.

SDSU’s Landon Badger reached on a fielding error to open the bottom of the fifth. Nick Smith, who finished 2-for-4, had a one-out single and Phil Velez was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Newt Johnson, who ended up 2-for-4, forced in Badger by drawing a two-out base on balls to knot the score at 1-all.

The Golden Eagles’ Noah Cummings led off the sixth with a home run. He also doubled while finishing 2-for-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Philip Jacobson – who went 2-for-5 – had a one-out single. Badger followed with a single of his own.

Tony Kjolsing reached on a bunt single, and an error on the play allowed Jacobson to sprint home and again tie the score.

Smith’s run-scoring hit made it 3-2 in favor of the hosts.

Luke Ringhofer drew a walk to get the bottom of the seventh going. Jacobson’s one-out RBI single pushed the margin to 4-2.

Badger then reached on an error, which allowed Jacobson to score to provide for the final margin.

Derek Feige (3-2) earned the pitching win in relief, giving up two hits while striking out a pair of batters in three innings of work.

Chris Halbur tossed a scoreless ninth, surrendering one hit, to pick up six sixth save of the season.

Starter Ethan Kenkel allowed two runs – one earned – on five this with two strikeouts and two walks in five-plus innings.

ORU’s Josh McMinn (6-3) took the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.
