South Dakota State sweeps Omaha on road

OMAHA, Neb. – The South Dakota State women’s basketball team swept Omaha on the road over the weekend to improve to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in Summit League play.

Friday

 South Dakota Sate 62, Omaha 50

It was a slow start for SDSU on Friday. The Jackrabbits trailed the Mavericks 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Jacks outscored the Mavericks 10-6 in the second quarter and and were down one at halftime. SDSU turned it on in the third quarter, outscoring Omaha 24-16 and led by seven heading into the fourth. They kept the momentum going and rode it to the finish line to come away with the win.

Myah Selland led SDSU once again with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Paiton Burckhard had 12 points and four rebounds. Tori Nelson finished with eight points and six assists. Tylee Irwin had nine points and Lindsey Theuninck had six.

The Jacks shot 41% from the field, but were just 3-for-21 from three. SDSU outrebounded Omaha 39-31 and forced 17 turnovers.

Omaha was led by Elena Pilakouta who had 15 points and seven rebounds. Ella Ogier had 12 points and Josie Filer had 10. The Jacks held the Mavericks to 38.1% shooting from the field and Omaha was 5-for-16 from three.

Saturday

 South Dakota State 64, Omaha 54

The Jacks started out slow again on Saturday and trailed the Mavericks 17-13 after one quarter. SDSU flipped the script in the second quarter, outscoring Omaha 17-13 and the game was tied heading into the locker room.

SDSU flexed its muscles in the third quarter and took an eight-point lead heading into the final quarter. The teams trading baskets in the fourth quarter and the Jacks got out of Omaha with two wins.

Selland led the Jacks again with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Burckhard and Nelson each had 12 points. Madysen Vlastuin had nine points.

The Jacks shot 43.8% from the field and were 7-for-22 from three. SDSU was 15-for-17 from the free throw line.

Pilkouta led the Mavericks once again with double-double. She finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ogier had nine points and Sarah Schmitt had eight. The Mavericks shot 37.5% from three and were 1-for-12 from three.

SDSU plays back-to-back games against North Dakota at Frost Arena Friday and Saturday. Each game is set to start at 5 p.m.
