South Dakota State University students present upcoming recitals

BROOKINGS – Two South Dakota State University students are set to present upcoming recitals on April 30 at Petersen Recital Hall.

At 4 p.m., senior Jennifer (Johnson) Karlen, a music education major from De Smet, will perform.

Karlen, a mezzo-soprano, will be accompanied by Deb Kalsbeck and Katie Arndt. She is instructed by Dr. Emily Toronto. The recital will feature pieces about romance, love and faith.

During her time at SDSU, Karlen has been involved in the Women's Choir, Concert Band, Opera Workshop and Flute Ensemble. She is a two-time winner of the South Dakota National Association of Teachers of Singing in the adult division. She has also competed in Upper Division Women's Musical Theater.

This fall, Karlen is student teaching at Sioux Valley School District in Volga. She is set to graduate in December.

At 7 p.m. junior Katherine Housiaux, a music education and Spanish double-major from Brookings, will perform.

Housiaux, also a mezzo-soprano, will be accompanied by Deb Kalsbeck. She is instructed by Dr. Emily Toronto. Her recital will feature pieces from Johann Strauss, and Mexican and American folk songs.
