BROOKINGS – The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Delta David Geier, will perform at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert features the music of Richard Strauss, Felix Mendelssohn and a new work by New York-based composer Frank Oteri.

The performance is sponsored by South Dakota State University, the School of Performing Arts, the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, the William Mibra Griffith and Byrne S. Griffith Educational Fund and the Brookings Chamber Music Society.

The concert caps a week of experiences in the SDSU School of Performing Arts. Oteri had livestreamed conversations with students in music and music appreciation classes. Geier prepared a concert introduction that has been shown in the various classes that will attend the concert.

“It is a rare opportunity for our students to work with and hear professional musicians during the pandemic. We are grateful to hear this literature performed at a high level of musicianship, live and on our very own concert stage,” said David Reynolds, director of the School of Performing Arts.

Seating for all performance activities at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center is limited due to the COVID-19 protocols. The concert will be livestreamed for viewing by the Brookings community using the Facebook Live platform. The livestream is available through a gift from The Dian Graves Owen Foundation, which has allowed the School of Performing Arts to purchase streaming equipment to share its events.
