Spring cleanup: Moving it all out

Posted

City crews were out Monday picking up trash in the boulevards on Main Avenue, just south of First Lutheran Church. Employees of the Brookings Street Department and Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department started in Sections 3, 4 and 1 on Monday for the annual Spring Clean-Up Week. For more details of the schedule for the rest of the week, see cityofbrookings.org online.

Street Superintendent Matt Bartley asked drivers to be careful around the crews while they are working, for everyone’s safety.

“Please use caution around the crews. They might have the whole block closed off at times,” he said. “Just be patient. It only takes us a few minutes to be out of the way.”

Residents may notice a change from previous years, thanks to Old Man Winter forcing postponements of the pick-up so it overlapped with South Dakota State University’s graduation and many out-of-town visitors.

“We’re kind of going from Sixth Street north to get that section done quickly. We are going a little bit out of our normal order, but we’re doing so (in order to give) Brookings the best view we can give,” Bartley said.
