State basketball tips off Thursday in R.C., S.F. and Aberdeen

The Class AA State Boys’ Basketball Tournament begins today at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, and the race for the title is wide open.

Games will be contested at Barnett Arena and the Ice Arena.

• No. 1 S.F. Lincoln (18-2) vs. No. 8 Harrisburg (12-9)

SoDak 16: SFL beat Mitchell 68-59, while Harrisburg topped Sturgis 60-48.

Previous: The Patriots topped the Tigers 61-43 on Feb. 22.

PATRIOTS: Losses came to Class A favorite Tea Area (65-47) on Feb. 2 at the Sanford Pentagon and 62-44 at O’Gorman on Feb. 19.

Jared Jaros leads the way with 18.9 points per game and Nate Brecht adds 13 to go with 7.4 rebounds.

TIGERS: Nick Hoyt scores 16.5 points per game and is an 82.3-percent free-throw shooter.

SoDak 16: BV dropped Brookings 73-47 and RCS edged rival Rapid City Central 52-51 in a rematch of last year’s state tourney third-place game.

LYNX: Evan Talcott has averages of 16 points and 6.1 rebounds. Carter Olthoff adds 14.7 points and Jackson Hilton 11.8 per game. Each of Brandon Valley’s five starters shoots 45 percent or better from the field.

RAIDERS: Dylan Pourier does a majority of the scoring for the Raiders, averaging 16.5 points per game. Stevens is coached by Chris Stoebner, a 1,000-point scorer at SDSU.

SoDak 16: Yankton hammered Pierre 74-33. Huron beat the buzzer to topple Watertown 51-50.

Previous: The Bucks beat the Tigers 66-60 on Jan. 8 in Yankton.

BUCKS: The defending champions edged Harrisburg 39-37 in last year’s state final as the No. 11 seed.

Sophomore Matthew Mors is the man, averaging 22.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per outing. Cooper Cornemann adds 11.4 points per game, Rex Ryken 7.3 and reserve Cale Sawtzke 7.2.

TIGERS: Teegan Evers (17.8/6.7) and Kobe Busch (16.6/7.5) combine to average more than 34 points and 14 rebounds per game.

SoDak 16: OG defeated Aberdeen Central 68-59. SFR beat in-town foe Roosevelt 71-58.

KNIGHTS: Balanced. Luke Ronsiek averages 11.5 points, Zach Norton 9.4, Akoi Akoi 9.2 and Jack Cartwright 8.5.

ROUGH RIDERS: Also balanced. Tyler Feldkamp puts up 14.5 points per game, Tucker West 13, Carson Devericks 10 and Aidan Evans 9.5.

SIOUX FALLS – The Class A Girls’ and Boys’ State Basketball Tournaments begin today at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center and Sioux Falls Arena.

St. Thomas More and Lennox qualified for both tourneys. The Cavaliers and Orioles also match up in the quarterfinals in both events.

West Central is as balanced offensively as they come with Megan Madsen averaging 9.5 points, Kali Nelson eight, Rylee Haldeman 7.6, Rachel Eickman seven, Cassidy Siemonsma 6.6, Cheyanne Masterson 6.3 and Addy Kramer six.

TITANS: Katlyn Briggs shoots 55 percent from the field and puts up 13.6 points per game to go with 7.3 rebounds. Emilee Fox adds 9.1 points and Hailey Walz 7.3.

SoDak 16: Orioles topped Sioux Falls Christian 51-46. STM beat Flandreau 56-42.

Previous: Lennox beat STM 61-57 in overtime at the Hanson Classic on Jan. 12.

ORIOLES: Madysen Vlastuin leads the charge with 16.5 points and six rebounds per game. Rianna Fillipi adds 13.2 points and 6.6 boards. Riley Peters averages 12.5 points.

CAVALIERS: STM has won six of the past seven state titles, including five consecutively. The Cavaliers beat Madison 54-41 in the 2018 final.

Haleigh Timmer averages 21.1 points – shooting 51 percent from the field and 86 percent at the foul line – and 7.4 rebounds. Ciara Benson adds 7.1 points, Kaci Cooper 6.8 and Lizzy Elder 6.2.

STM won the Black Hills Conference with a 9-0 record.

TITANS: Lone loss was a 78-64 setback to LaLumiere, Ind., on Dec. 29 in the Pentagon. Handed Class AA No. 1 Sioux Falls Lincoln one of its two losses, 65-47, on Feb. 2 at the Pentagon.

Noah Freidel leads the team, averaging 22.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Justin Hohn adds 13.1 points, Kade Stearns 10.5 and Kaleb Joffer 9.4.

The Titans won the Dakota XII Conference crown with a 10-0 record.

Tea was runner-up a year ago, falling 72-59 to Madison in the title game.

SoDak 16: Cyclones hammered Dell Rapids St. Mary 66-33. Chargers topped Lemmon 66-53.

Previous: Did not meet during the regular season, but this is a rematch of last year’s title tilt – won 58-55 by the Chargers. Sully Buttes scored the first 20 points of the fourth quarter in that game, turning a 10-point deficit into a 58-48 advantage with less than a minute to go.

CYCLONES: Losses are to Class A favorite Tea Area and Class A SoDak 16 qualifier Flandreau.

Jacob Prouty averages 19.9 points per game. He’s 109-of-140 (77.9 percent) from the line.

The Burkes average near double-doubles, with Micah totaling 14.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and Stone 12.5 and 9.6. Grayson Florey adds 7.2 ppg.

CHARGERS: Nick Wittler is the player to watch, as he averages 22.5 points per game to go with four assists and five boards. Cam Ogle chips in with 12.5 points and Jeff Lamb 11.
