When you are setting records during part of a football dynasty, you are bound to receive some post-season attention.

That is what happened for the Madison offense, which put four players on the Class 11A All-State Football team, as selected by the South Dakota Football Coaches Association.

The three-time champion Bulldogs – who have played for the 11A title in five straight seasons – had five players honored overall. Four of those were on an offense that generated nearly 40 points per game: Quarterback Josh Giles, running back Jadon Janke, wide receiver Jaxon Janke and tackle Quentin McKinney. Linebacker Doyle Brown is the other selection for Madison.

“They’ve been a special group,” said Madison head coach Max Hodgen. “I’ve been pleased to work with them.”

Dell Rapids also had five honorees, including four on offense and one on defense. St. Thomas More, which fell in the semifinals for a second straight season, had four honorees.

Dakota Valley, which was undefeated until losing to Madison in the final, had three honorees. Tea Area, Milbank and Tri-Valley each had two selections. Todd County, West Central, Vermillion, Lennox and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte each had one honoree.

Here is a look at the honorees:

OFFENSE

Quarterback

Josh Giles, Madison (Sr., 5-10, 156)

Giles finished his outstanding two-year career for Madison as the team’s all-time leading passer, finishing this season with 2,201 yards and 34 touchdowns. For his career, he threw for 4,836 yards and 72 scores, completing 62.7 percent of his passes.

“When Josh came in as a junior, there were a lot of unknowns,” Hodgen said. “But he was poised and calm, and delivered a great ball. He broke all our passing records and exceeded expectations.”

Fullback

Matt Gillogly, Dell Rapids (Sr., 6-2, 200)

A physical and smart back, Gillogly rushed for 739 yards (7.2 ypc) and seven scores, and caught three passes for 87 yards and a score. He finished his career with 987 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“Matt is a big strong kid, and is very intelligent,” said Quarriers head coach Steven Hansen. “When things would get interesting we would go to Matt to get things back on track.”

Running Back

Jadon Janke, Madison (Sr., 6-3, 190)

Janke rushed for 1,250 yards and 18 scores on the season, helping the Bulldogs average nearly 40 points per game on the way to an undefeated season. He finished his career with 1,931 yards and 28 touchdowns.

“Jadon might possibly be the best athlete I’ve ever coached,” Hodgen said. “He is the type of player that can carry a team when things are going bad.”

Austin Carter, Dakota Valley (Sr., 5-8, 175)

The workhorse of the Panthers’ three-headed running attack, Carter rushed for 752 yards (5.3 ypc) and 10 touchdowns, and went for a touchdown on both of his catches. A three-year starter and two-time all-Dakota XII Conference selection, he finished his career with 1,751 yards and 17 touchdowns.

“Austin was a grinder,” said Dakota Valley head coach Jeff VanDenHul. “He’s also one that can break tackles. He can turn a 5-yard run to 12, a 10-yard run to 30.”

Wide Receiver

Jaxon Janke, Madison (Sr., 6-3, 195)

One of the more explosive receivers in the state, Janke caught 50 passes for 1,113 yards (22.3 ypc) and 22 touchdowns. In 36 career games, he finished with 104 catches for 2,330 yards (22.4 ypc) and 41 touchdowns.

“Jaxon has a knack for making the big play, and plays with uncanny instinct and poise,” Hodgen said. “He is a threat to score any time he touches the ball from anywhere on the field.”

Thomas Rafferty, St. Thomas More (Sr., 6-0, 182)

Rafferty was an explosive target for the Cavaliers, recording 29 catches for 741 yards (25.6 ypc) and 11 scores. He had three touchdowns of 70 or more yards on the season. For his career, he had 61 catches for 1,167 yards and 18 touchdowns.

“Thomas was usually the fastest athlete on the field,” said STM head coach Wayne Sullivan. “He had a great attitude every time he stepped on the field.”

Tight End

Jeff Schuch, Dell Rapids (Sr., 6-5, 200)

A three-year starter, Schuch caught 22 passes for 380 yards and five touchdowns. For his career, he had 38 catches for 582 yards and eight scores.

“Jeffery has great hands and can feel the game to find the open hole where the ball needs to be delivered,” Hansen said.

Tackles

Quentin McKinney, Madison (Sr., 6-2, 205)

McKinney started the final 16 games of his career, all Bulldog victories. This season he did not allow a sack while blocking for an offense that produced a 1,000-yard rusher and a 2,000-yard passer.

“If you can’t keep your quarterback upright, you don’t have the production we had,” Hodgen said. “He was a ‘set him and forget it’ player – he would take care of his job.”

Brennan Moran, Dakota Valley (Sr., 6-4, 280)

A three-year starter and two-time all-Dakota XII selection, Moran helped clear the way for the Panthers’ 3,000-yard rushing attack. He was often asked to pull in the Panthers’ run game.

“He’s part of the reason we made the move to the offense we did,” VanDenHul said. “He had a knack for clearing out a hole, then finding someone else to block. We have him on film blocking 30 yards down field.”

Guards

Joe Gabaldon, Todd County (Sr., 5-11, 290)

Gabaldon was a key part of a Falcons team that went from 2-7 to 7-3, helping the team average 292 yards per game on the ground and score a school-record 44.6 points per game. He also did not give up a sack the entire season.

“Joe is a team captain and is good at working with our younger kids,” said Falcons head coach Bob Kornely. “He is a good role model in our school and community.”

Kyle Steineke, Dell Rapids (Sr., 6-0, 230)

A three-year starter, Steineke helped power the Quarriers to a 7-3 record.

“Kyle is very explosive with good hips,” Hansen said. “He was the perfect pulling guard for us.”

Center

Jess Michel, Dell Rapids (Sr., 5-10, 210)

Michel has been a two-year starter for the Quarriers.

“Jess is a team leader on and off the field,” Hansen said. “He has been very consistent in the middle of the line for us the last two years.”

DEFENSE

Defensive End

Kaleb Joffer, Tea Area (Jr., 6-3, 252)

A three-year starter, Joffer was a force in the defensive front for the Titans, recording 51 tackles (5.5 TFL) and three sacks. He also forced two fumbles, recovering one. For his career, the two-time all Dakota XII Conference selection has 104 tackles.

“Kaleb has some of the best feet that we have ever coached,” said Titans head coach Craig Clayberg. “He wants to play college football, and has worked hard to get where he is at.”

Mitchell Quade, Milbank (Sr., 6-2, 200)

A force up front for the Bulldogs, Quade recorded 21 tackles for loss and five sacks among his 58 stops. He also had two interceptions, returning one for touchdown, and two fumble recoveries. He had 96 tackles (33 TFL) and eight sacks in his career.

“Mitchell has been a big part of our team’s success the past three seasons,” said Milbank head coach Jeremy Tostenson. “He has been a game-changer at defensive end.”

Defensive Tackle

Kobe Whipple, St. Thomas More (Sr., 6-1, 255)

An honorable mention selection a season ago, Whipple recorded 76 tackles, including 11 for loss and four sacks. He also forced three fumbles this season, finishing with seven forced fumbles for his career. He posted 143 tackles, 19 for loss, in two seasons as a starter for the Cavaliers.

“He worked hard to become an incredible football player,” Sullivan said. “He lost 50 pounds and changed his body in order to play at a high level.”

Cole Van Duyn, Dell Rapids (Sr., 6-1, 220)

A force up front for the Quarriers, Van Duyn notched 62 tackles and a fumble recovery this season.

“He is one of the strongest players I have ever coached,” Hansen said. “He was one of those guys that could transfer weight room strength to the field.”

Linebacker

Doyle Brown, Madison (Jr., 6-1, 166)

The leader on a new-look defense for the Bulldogs, Brown recorded 88 tackles (20 TFL) and 7.5 sacks. For his career, he has 160 tackles, 25 for loss and 9.5 sacks.

“Defense was our main concern coming into this season. We had seven or eight new starters,” Hodgen said. “Doyle was our defensive MVP. He has a motor that won’t quit.”

Jacob Kasowski, Tri-Valley (Sr., 6-2, 230)

A three-year starter, Kasowski recorded 69 tackles, four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery this season. A two-time all-Dakota XII selection, he posted 194 tackles, 15 sacks and three interceptions during his career.

“Jacob is a top-of-the-line student-athlete both on and off the field,” said Tri-Valley head coach Steve Bazata. “He is a big tough kid who is always team-first.”

Chase Hammerstrom, Dakota Valley (Sr., 5-11, 200)

Hammerstrom posted 47 tackles (8.5 TFL), two sacks and an interception for the Panthers. A two-year starter, he had 88 tackles (10.5 TFL) and three sacks in his career.

“Chase really stepped up his level of play,” VanDenHul said. “He’s a film rat. Half the time he’s calling out the play before the play happens.”

Jake Larson, St. Thomas More (Sr., 6-1, 185)

A three-year starter for the Cavaliers, Larson posted 64 tackles (4 TFL) and two sacks.

“Jake worked extremely hard to be a football player at an elite level,” Sullivan said.

Defensive Back

Carter Slykhuis, Tea Area (Jr., 5-10, 161)

A two-time all-Dakota XII Conference pick, Slykhuis posted 65 tackles (2 TFL), one interception and three pass breakups. He has 100 tackles and three interceptions in his career.

Devon Garry, West Central (Sr., 6-0, 170)

A two-year all-Dakota XII selection, Garry recorded 32 tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception for the Trojans. An honorable mention all-state selection a season ago, he posted 63 tackles and four interceptions in his career.

Cole Dockter, Milbank (Sr., 6-0, 180)

Dockter was a defensive weapon for the Bulldogs, recording 65 tackles (8 TFL), five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The two-time all-Northeast Conference pick, he recorded 122 tackles (24 TFL), five interceptions, four fumble recoveries and 10 sacks in his career.

“Cole has been a big part of our team’s success the past three seasons,” Tostenson said. “He has thrived at safety this season.”

Landon Freeman, Tri-Valley (Sr., 5-11, 170)

A two-time all-Dakota XII selection, he recorded 35 tackles and four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. In three seasons as a starter, he posted 80 tackles and eight interceptions, returning two for scores.

“Landon is a big-time playmaker,” Bazata said.

SPECIALISTS

Kicker

Joe Poepple, St. Thomas More (Sr., 6-2, 180)

Poepple was perfect on 35 PAT kicks this season, as well as 3-5 on field goals. He also executed seven pooch kicks that the Cavaliers recovered. For his career, he was 67-70 on PAT kicks and had a career long of a 42-yard field goal.

“Joe was a weapon for us with his kicking abilities,” Sullivan said.

Punter

Brody Surrell, Vermillion (Sr., 6-4, 225)

Surrell attempted 15 punts, averaging 35.1 yards per attempt this season.

“Brody really came into his own this year, and had it click what it took to be a football player,” said Tanagers head coach Andy Homan. “He was really good at trying to help the younger guys come along, and just got what it means to be a team player.”

Special Teams Player

Holdyn Breck, Lennox (Sr., 6-2, 175)

Breck had 17 kick returns, averaging 21 yards per attempt and recording one touchdown. For his career, he averaged 23 yards per return and had two touchdowns.

Long Snapper

John Henry Hale, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (Sr., 6-4, 285)

After dealing with injury issues that sidelined him for part of his sophomore and junior seasons, Hale showed what he could do with a full season, providing strong protection while handling his special teams duties.

“John is a very hard worker and a very talented football player,” said Braves head coach Michael Scott. “He’s truly an all-state player on both sides of the ball.”
