Stevens leads SV past Deuel

VOLGA – Sioux Valley broke open the game with a big third quarter, beating Deuel 74-47 in a Lake Central Conference girls’ basketball game Tuesday evening.

“I thought we came out and played okay,” said Cossack coach Jamie Granum. “I went in the locker room and I think it was one of many times this year where I’ve just been amped up and, I don’t know, freaking out about our play. I want our kids to play hard; and once you establish playing hard, I think everything else in the game comes easy. In this game anyway, we did not play hard in the first half.

“I wasn’t worried about the scoreboard – we’re going to come out and score – it’s not a scoring thing with this team, it’s a defensive issue that’s been lingering for too long and we have to a few games to get it fixed.”

The Cossacks were up 21-11 after a quarter and 36-24 at halftime. They pushed the margin to 63-36 through three.

Lynsey Stevens was nearly unstoppable going to the basket, totaling 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

“She’s a super athlete. She might be one of the best rim-runners in the state,” added Granum. “In the first day of practice, we taped a line down the middle of the floor and we told her to wear that tape out, because not very many people can cover her down the middle of the floor and especially if you get a wing going on your right side with Carly and your left wing with Miakken – two of the best shooters in the state – and it kind of frees up that middle lane for us.”

Carly Granum finished 6-of-12 from 3-point range for 18 points.

Miakken Vincent hit three treys while adding 11 markers. Rachel Miller made four of her five shots, totaling nine points, while Cassie Rawden contributed eight points.

Sioux Valley shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the field.

The Cardinals got 15 points from Britney Lovre and 10 apiece by Kendra Damm and Jaydyn TeGantvoort.

Deuel (4-14, 1-4) plays host to Tiospa Zina on Thursday.

Sioux Valley (12-6, 3-2) heads to Castlewood on Tuesday.
