Stevens, Ziegler lead Cossacks

VOLGA – The host Cossacks’ Lynsey Stevens and Nikole Ziegler dominated the jumps during the Sioux Valley Invite on Tuesday.

Stevens won the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 11 1/2 inches and the triple jump at 33 feet, 1/2 inch. She was runner-up in the high jump, clearing 4-10.

Ziegler also topped 4-10 in the high jump to place first. She was second in the long (15-8 1/4) and triple (35-2) jumps.

Flandreau’s Madeline Hursey swept the 1,600 and 3,200, posting winning times of 5 minutes, 55.4 seconds and 13 minutes, 7.5 seconds, respectively.

The Fliers won three relays.

Isabella Pavlis, Ashtyn Bertram, Kathy Parsley and Hannah Parsley finished first in the 4x400 in 4:24.4. 

Madeline Hursey, Elizabeth Hursey, Mara Lunday and Hannah Parsley won the 4x800 with a 10:30.5 clocking.

Bertram, Kathy Parsley, Hannah Parsley and Elizabeth Hursey were tops in the medley at 4:39.4.

Lake Preston’s Ashlyn Bertram won the 800 in 2:35.3 and teamed with Ashley Neely, Lindsay Hillestad and Rylie Brown to take the 4x200 relay crown with a time of 1:51.1.

Brown added second-place finishes in the 100 (12.9) and 200 (27.2).

Sioux Valley’s Baylea Lucas was runner-up in both hurdles events, clocking times of 18.3 in the 100 and 52.9 in the 300.

Three other Fliers posted second-place finishes – Lunday in the 800 (2:41.5), Elizabeth Hursey in the 3200 (13:31.3) and Ellen Thompson in the discus (90-11).

Boys

Lane VanderWal paced the hosts, winning the triple jump with a mark of 39-10 and taking second in the 100 in 12 seconds.

Daymein Lucas, Chase Ringheimer, Trevor Olson and Tyler Schwartz teamed to place first in the 4x100 relay with a 48.4-second clocking. Brayden Havrevold was runner-up in the shot put at 42-0 1/4.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland had a pair of individuals pick up wins as Casey Renaas took the 800 title in 2:18.6 and Jamus Brown was tops in the long jump with a mark of 19-5 1/2. Connor Spilde was runner-up in the 3,200 (11:34.5).

Lake Preston’s Rhett McMasters had a solid day.

He won the 3,200 in 10:44.4 and was runner-up in the 1,600 with a time of 4:53.5. Jasper Denison, Byron Bumann, Tate Larsen and McMasters finished first in the medley relay in 4:02.

Bumann added a runner-up showing in the discus (125-8).

Flandreau’s Andrew Julson placed second in the 200 (24.1).
