STM, Madison share girls’ title in Class A; Charger boys edge Cavs

Posted

SIOUX FALLS – Flandreau’s Kylie Bertram, Ashtyn Bertram, Hannah Parsley and Elizabeth Hursey placed eighth in the girls’ medley relay in a time of 4 minutes, 32.02 seconds at the Class A State Track & Field Meet on Saturday at Howard Wood Field.

Defending-champion St. Thomas More and Madison shared the team title with 64 points apiece. Custer (62) was third.

Sioux Valley ended up 25th in the team standings with 11 points, while the Fliers were 34th with one point.

The Cavaliers were the top seed in the final event – the 4x400-meter relay – however, they were disqualified. Had they finished the event, they would have won the team title outright.

Instead, the Lady Bulldogs’ Jennifer Giles, Hailey Streff, Anna Theophilus and Olivia Rud took advantage of the opportunity and teamed to win the event in 4:03.14 to earn a share of the team championship.

Belle Fourche’s Shayla Howell was named Track MVP and Field MVP. On Saturday, she won the 100-meter dash in 12.33 seconds and the 200 in 25.62. She placed first in the long jump and triple jump (meet record) on the opening day.

Caelyn Valandra-Prue of Todd County won the 400 in a meet-record time of 56.52.

Custer’s Jordan Menken placed first in the discus (137-7) after winning the shot put on Friday.

Dakota Valley’s Marisa Schulz won the 1,600 (5:06.16) on Saturday and Alyssa Johnson took the high jump title on Friday as both were members of the Panthers’ winning medley relay team (4:14.22).

West Central’s Averi Schmeichel won the 100 hurdles (15.37) and was on the Trojans’ victorious 4x200 relay team (1:45.77).

Boys

The Sioux Falls Christian boys were in the exact same situation as the St. Thomas More girls – finish the 4x400 and win the team title outright.

The Chargers’ Mitch Oostra, Cooper Hitt, DeJay Fykstra and Justus Adams placed third in 3:27.85 to seal the deal.

Christian totaled 112 team points to edge two-time defending champion STM (106). The Cavaliers did their part in the final as Spencer Lund, Ty Trainor, Luke Julian and Jake Aanderud placed first in 3:25.87.

Madison (41) was a distant third on the team leaderboard.

Track MVP Cameron Kuil, a senior from Winner, won the 200 (22.26) and 400 (48.52) and was second in the 100 (11.08 – .01 behind the winner).

Chamberlain senior Tiegen Priebe was named Field MVP. He won the long jump and was runner-up in the triple jump on Friday, before placing third in the 400 meters (50.2) on Saturday.

In addition to anchoring STM’s 4x400 relay, Aanderud also won the 100 (11.07) and was on the Cavaliers’ winning 4x200 relay squad (1:30.52).

Sioux Falls Christian’s Caleb DeWeerd was first in the 1,600 (4:18.88) and anchored his team’s winning medley relay run (3:37.45). On Friday, he won the 800 and was part of the top-finishing 4x800 squad.

After taking the triple jump title on Friday, Jaxon Janke anchored Madison’s winning 4x100-meter relay team (43.66) on Saturday.

The Chargers’ Cooper Hitt was on two winning relay teams – medley on Day 1 and 4x800 on Day 2.

St. Thomas More won the combined team award.
