BROOKINGS – A Rapid City woman was arrested after a car was stolen in Brookings and recovered hours later in Presho, according to the Brookings Police Department.

The 2012 Chrysler 200 was reported stolen at 8:50 a.m. Monday from the 700 block of Third Street, Lt. Derrick Powers said.

“The reporting party realized ... prior to contacting the police department that someone had been in the residence since they had went to bed the previous night. Upon going outside, they noticed that their vehicle was missing,” Powers said.

“The keys were taken from inside the residence,” he said, adding the residence was unlocked.

The BPD alerted other law enforcement agencies about the theft.

“About 12:45 p.m., we were contacted by law enforcement in the Presho, S.D., area that they had located the vehicle,” Powers said. “It was actually being operated by a female. They were able to stop the vehicle in that area. She was subsequently arrested by them, so it was recovered.”

She was identified as a 26-year-old Rapid City resident who had been in the Brookings area, and she was not known to the owner of the vehicle, Powers said.

“She’ll be facing charges locally for the theft of a motor vehicle and burglary of the residence,” he said.
