Strong first half propels Cossacks to win over Fliers

FLANDREAU – After narrowly escaping with a win last week, the Sioux Valley football team took care of business Friday with a 48-14 win over the Flandreau Fliers.

“We had a great week of practice and preparation. We were able to jump on them early, had 32 points at halftime. The offense played great. Coach [Jordan] Fast did another great job with the defense. It was great,” Said Sioux Valley head coach Dan Hughes.

The Cossacks outscored the Fliers 32-6 in the first half. Hughes was impressed with his defense’s performance.

“We just did a great job of preparing this week. I think that’s what allowed us to be so successful [on defense],” Hughes said.

McKade Rentsch got the scoring going a little over two and a half minutes into the game. He ran it 48 yards to the house and Damian Danzeisen ran in the two-point conversion to make it 8-0. Danzeisen would then catch a 79-yard touchdown from Parker Puetz on the Cossacks next possession. Carson Christopherson caught a pass from Puetz for the two-point conversion and it was 16-0 Sioux Valley with 1:43 left in the first quarter.

Rentsch would then run it in from one yard out with 6:15 left in the first half. Joe Hornick ran in the two-point conversion and the Cossacks were up 24-0. Christopherson caught a 66-yard touchdown to make it 32-0 after Layson Lucas two-point conversion.

Flandreau’s Tanner Christenson found Ethan Hoffman from 25 yards out with 16 seconds left to make it 32-6 at halftime.

David Knutson got in on the action with 7:10 left in the third quarter when Puetz found him for a 23-yard touchdown. Christopherson caught the two-point conversion to make it 40-6.

Chase LeBrun caught a 31-yard touchdown on the Fliers next possession. Hoffman ran in the two=point conversion to make it 40-14 with 4:47 left in the third.

Jace Christensen then tossed a touchdown pass for Sioux Valley. He found Caleb Murphy from 23 yards out and Danzeisen ran in the two-point conversion for the final score of the night.

Sioux Valley had 441 yards of total offense. Puetz was 8-for-9 with 232 yards and three touchdowns.

Rentsch had five carries for 68 yards and two scores. Danzeisen caught four passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Christopherson caught two passes for 75 yards.

The Fliers had 343 total yards of offense. Christenson was 13-for-17 with 162 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Hoffman caught seven passes for 66 yards and Chase Lebrun had two catches for 39 yards.

Tathan Headrick had 14 carries for 86 yards. Hoffman had 67 yards on 14 carries.

Carson Christopherson led Sioux Valley with 10 tackles. Brock Christopherson had eight. Headrick had seven tackles for Flandreau.

Sioux Valley is now 6-1 on the season. The Cossacks entered Friday at No. 2 in Class B behind Winner who is undefeated.

The Cossacks host Beresford to end the regular season. The Bulldogs entered Friday with 4-2 record. Sioux Valley has already locked up a playoff spot, but Hughes said his team needs to take care of business in the final game of the season.

“We just had a convincing win. We got one more left and we’re going to get ready for that one, and then we’ll take care of [the playoffs] when that time comes,” Hughes said.
