Stubbs, Schaefer win Sanford Futures

LARCHWOOD, Iowa – South Dakota State’s Piper Stubbs and Matthew Schaefer won their respective divisions of the Sanford Golf Futures Tour Tuesday at the Grand Falls Golf Resort.

Stubbs set a new two-round tournament record at 10-under, winning by 14 strokes over second place. The rising sophomore fired a 66-68 with 13 birdies and 20 pars on her way to the first-place finish in the women’s college division.

Schaefer finished in a tie for first place at 7-under and birdied on the first playoff hole to win the men’s college division. He put together a 71-68-70 final scorecard with 13 birdies over the 54-hole event. Schaefer, a rising senior, along with Minnesota’s Jacob Pedersen, bested the third-place finisher by four shots.

Stubbs was joined in the women’s tournament by teammates Shakira-Ann Kuys and Alex Kandolin. Kuys took fourth place at +10 and Kandolin was sixth at +13.

Jonah Dohrer, Blake Schaper, Lucas Schaefbauer and Luke Honner also represented the SDSU men. Dohrer took fourth place (E), Schaper was tied for sixth (+2), Schaefbauer tied for 10th (+5) and Honner rounded out the squad in a tie for 14th place (+9).

The SDSU teams are coming up on their 2022-23 seasons. The men will officially open the year by hosting the Island Resort Intercollegiate Sept. 4-5 in Harris, Mich. while the women’s team will host the Fall Jackrabbit Invitational Sept. 18-19 at the Brookings Country Club.
